The Future of Cloud

Please join Sean Ferrel as we talk about cloud marketplaces, brokerage and the long term effects of managing your customers cloud strategy. The public cloud offers a whole new world of reoccurring revenue for all of us!

Over the next several years’ public cloud management will be key to the success of both distributors and integrators alike. Cost management, brokerage, and overall management will be at the center of how we manage our customers and automation will allow us to quickly make informed decisions when working with providers.

Large Public Cloud Providers are just starting to gain maturity and most organizations are taking a deeper look at these utility models. While we all have our favorite cloud partners so do our customers and it’s important we look at cloud much like we look at purchasing airline tickets; compare all brands and make sure getting from point A to B is seamless and cost effective.

Will we live in a world where we bid our datacenter space out to the highest bidder or can we call the shots on price, performance and overall spend?….We believe so!

Modernizing a 35 Year Old ERP Application to Cloud and Mobile With PostgreSQL: A Case Study

This session presents real world examples of applications that were originally built with development tools and products that are either older, obsolete or that have declining popularity. It shows how those applications have been modernized in ways that make them compatible with modern application demands. A key feature of this approach is the use of Postgresql as the cornerstone or foundation of the modernization effort.

A typical result of this process is that what was perhaps a 40 year old green screen application based on a non-relational database is transformed into a more useable and futureproof form. That is it is transformed into an application with a responsive user interface (browser, mobile) that is built on Restful API’s. Further, developers who were once constrained by older technologies are now able to extend and enhance the application using features of Postgresql and other modern technologies such as Angular.js, Bootstrap and JSON.

The session also shows how by standardizing on Postgresql as the modernization target, it also serves as an application consolidation and standardization tool. Thus such desktop applications as Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Dbase or mainframe applications based on languages such as COBOL can be standardized to use a Postgresql backend. This consolidation can reduce the skills needed to maintain the older applications in many ways.

Securing the Internet of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) has given rise to operational efficiency and convenience. However, organizations are often unaware of exposures created. The increasing connectivity of hardware is creating new avenues of access for potential threat actors. The potential exists to create kinetic (physical) attacks on manufacturing plants, power distribution and medical support systems. Recent successful attacks in Europe and other parts of the world are now motivating threat actors to target these vulnerable industries. IoT will not slow down, nor will the opportunities to exploit it. There are however, effective countermeasures available that can mitigate against such threats. Increased training in concert with the implementation of network defenses can defeat adversaries. Organizations would do well to implement these defenses to protect their most critical assets.

Panel - The Cloud Tipping Point
For the first time, more than 50% of organizations have chosen cloud as the platform of choice.  Every organization reaches a technology tipping point.  New systems and processes work better and make more financial sense than existing ones.   We are at a cloud tipping point—a time when organizations are opting to be cloud forward or cloud first.

In this session we’ll discuss the organizational shift to cloud as well as 5 ways that visionary IT organizations can become strategic partners in this time of transition.

The move to a cloud forward state goes well beyond the replacement of aging systems and traditional refresh cycles.  The shift to cloud has become as much about technology and culture as it has about innovation.

In fact, for some organizations the shift to cloud has also become cultural. Dev Ops and Lines of Business have a strong voice in cloud selection and procurement. So what does the term cloud first mean and why now?

We’ll also explore how a Dev Ops philosophy is leading the charge in a Cloud First world.

So if DevOps is driving this cultural shift and Lines are Business are flexing their IT Procurement muscles where does this leave central IT?  It’s clear that moving to a cloud- first world changes just about everything.  How can your IT team navigate the change?

Forward thinking IT firms are shifting from being a builders of computing infrastructure to being brokers of cloud services.

We’ll tell you how these firms are finding balance and staying relevant.

Technology Was Supposed To Fix Elections After The 2000 Presidential Election. Now, There Are Claims That It Is Being FIXED!
Sixteen years after the infamous “hanging chad”, the United States continues to wrestle with introducing voting technology to improve the administration of elections, while safeguarding the voting system from being hacked.  Can the two co-exist or will there be a constant tug-of-war?  Michael will discuss just how far the country has come since the 2000 Presidential Election.  He will talk about the most recent 2016 Presidential General Election; the allegation of Russian interference and hacking; the President’s tweets that there were 3 million illegal votes cast; what the future may hold; and whether Democracy is in jeopardy.  Along the way, he will discuss what safeguards are in place in California, specifically in San Diego County, to ensure eligible voters are casting ballots and how votes are counted accurately.

Cloud, a paradigm shift for Data Science
Data Science has been a game changer for all forms of businesses and applications. With increased focus on Actions today vs. actionable insights a few years ago, the need for an enabling environment has shot up too. Big data, APIzation, integration of multiple streams, Real time processing and Mobile Interfacing have played a crucial role in up-leveling data science and it's applications. However the real pivot happened with the arrival of Cloud tech- Internet of Things, Smartness of Smart devices, Industrial Internet, Artificial Intelligence are just few of the examples. SaaS has brought in an unprecedented power to Analytics, Testing, Research & Artificial Intelligence. Also as more sensitive applications move to the cloud, it brings up questions surrounding data transfer from on-premise to cloud, security (private vs public), uptime SLAs & Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery, Regulatory, Social Policy & Privacy concerns, Instrumentation/Data Collection and network bandwidth. This talk will be a discussion on all of these aspects, thumb rules to determine the fit between the need and cloud tech and the planning & preparation required to ensure success of migration.

EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Many U.S.-based international companies will be hugely impacted by the extra-territorial reach of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that will be enforced effective May 2018. A two year transition was provided because organizations have a lot of work to do to prepare to comply with GDPR.

This is one of the reasons why the big cloud service providers are developing data centers in, for example, Ireland. If many of the companies attending this conference are focused or plan to focus on EU residents for sales/business development, I’d be happy to bring these organizations up to speed on both GDPR and the cross border data transfer rules, including Privacy Shield that replaced Safe Harbor.

Even if GDPR is not triggered, the cross border data transfer rules may apply. However many companies will need to comply with both GDPR and the cross border data transfer rules.

GDPR applies to organizations established outside the EU if they (either as controller or processor):

q  Process the personal data of EU residents when offering them goods or services. As this is determined on a case-by-case basis, would review applicable factors.

q  Transfer HR data of EU residents from the EU to another country (considered sensitive data).

q  Monitor the behavior of EU residents. As this is determined on a case-by-case basis, would review applicable factors.

Just some of GDPR’s impacts: expanded definition of personal data; formal Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) required for high risk Privacy-by-Design projects; data controllers and processors must generally appoint DPOs (Data Protection Officer), local representatives – would review the applicable conditions; any DPAs (Data Protection Authorities) can request documentation of proof of compliance; DPAs are empowered to enforce GDPR, including ceasing an entity’s business efforts in the EU with fines up to 2-4% of annual global turnover/gross profit

How Automation enables Highly Available Infrastructures

Automation - Enterprises around the world have seen significant amount of automation taking place over past 2-3 years. Just like most technology adoptions, Automation started off solving simpler problems first and now branching into more complex areas. Automation is not just simply scripting tasks. It requires creation of Automata which blends in issues' resolution and standard operating procedures.

IBM started the journey of Automation in 2013 starting with internal infrastructure. At present, it is provided as a part of service to IBM's Global Technology Clients. We also provide it as a service to clients who are not Global Technology Services' existing clients.

We have deployed this service to over 375 clients, covering over 600K servers (both virtual and physical) servers worldwide. We resolve over million incidents every month using the automation. Roughly 45% of issues, mainly sev 3, sev 4, are now handled through automation.

As a part of the maturity curve, we have now moved up the IT stack. With dozens or so clients, now we offer automation to offload DBA and various middleware tasks. We also integrate with technology such as Chef to provide Continuous Compliance.
